• On the other hand, we don?t want to work with a CPA who says ?no? to everything or tries to be the expert in other disciplines. We want a CPA who respects the opinions of other professionals (especially on matters in their own discipline) and is willing to discuss ideas with an open mind.
• We look for a CPA who is proactive in planning and issue-spotting for clients ? and in bringing in other professionals when appropriate ? rather than simply reporting a client?s taxes.
• Naturally, we look for a CPA who is willing to be a team player.

Working as a team

In addition to these qualities, it is critical that all team members be committed to following through on assignments, plans and actions.

When advisors have a significant difference of opinion, it is important that they discuss it together in private rather than in front of a client. Although we each owe the ultimate duty of loyalty to the client, we should respect team members by addressing differences with them rather than going behind their backs.

Think about the financial team like you would a basketball team. At first glance, the athletes don?t look that different. As you watch them play as a team, however, you see the different talents and roles each member has on the team. The point guard starts the process and makes the team go. The power forward provides toughness and rebounds. The slashing scorer puts the numbers on the board. But put the ball in the hands of the power forward in the wrong part of the court or ask the point guard to go get all the rebounds, and the results are usually not that successful.

In our experience, it is best for the financial advisor to be the point guard of the team. The point guard typically spends more time talking to the coach (client) and carrying out his or her wishes.

This is how Ray explains it to the client:

• The financial advisor is the go-to person for all financial issues.
• The financial advisor will introduce the client to the other professionals that are needed and help him or her navigate through all of the financial mazes that he or she needs to go through, always with his or her best interest at heart.
• The financial advisor is not charging the client an hourly rate, so he or she can spend a little more time (with less pressure) in gathering information, organizing information, preparing for meetings with the attorney and CPA, and making sure things get done.
• It is important to have three key, trusted advisors working together to help create estate and financial strategies.

Like on the court, each key advisor has an area of experience he or she brings to the table. We don?t believe it is possible for one person to be a knowledgeable professional in more than one of these disciplines. By working together and playing our positions, we create appropriate checks and balances to significantly decrease the chances of any missteps.

This is the winning formula for success in preparing your client for the future, and that?s more important than any other game he or she will play. After all, there is no ?I? in team.

European stocks rise, euro jumps on mixed US data

Europe's main stock markets drifted higher and the euro rose on Friday, as investors tracked mixed data from the US and took confidence over developments in the Greek debt crisis.

London's benchmark FTSE 100 index of leading shares added 0.42 percent to 5,965.58 points, the Paris CAC 40 added 0.41 percent to 3,594.83 points and in Frankfurt the DAX 30 rose 0.19 percent to 7,157.82 points.

Elsewhere, Amsterdam rose by 0.31 percent, Milan by 0.52 percent, Brussels by 0.94 percent and Zurich by 0.14 percent. Lisbon fell by 0.37 percent.

The European single currency rose sharply to $1.3179 from $1.3082 late in New York on Thursday.

In afternoon trade on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.07 percent to 13,262.41 percent, the broad-market S&P 500 edged up 0.19 percent to 1,405.20 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 0.10 percent to 3,059.43 points.

Traders were hesitant after the strong stocks runup this week and with new US data not giving a clear direction for the economy.

"There are growing concerns in the market that the 2012 rally in equity markets has become extremely overbought and ripe for setback," said the US-based Hightower Report.

The Labor Department reported a pickup in overall consumer prices in February, but it placed the blame almost entirely on surging pump prices for gasoline: food prices were flat, and the core consumer price index rose just 0.1 percent, slower than in January.

Federal Reserve data on industrial production gave an overall picture of only modest expansion in the sector so far this year, with flat growth in February following a 0.4 percent rise in January.

Meanwhile the University of Michigan index of consumer confidence fell by 1.0 point to 74.3, after analysts had forecast a slight rise.

"European markets have lacked conviction in pushing higher today at the end of a fairly positive week on both sides of the Atlantic," said CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson.

"This afternoon's slightly disappointing US data has taken some of the edge of the recent bullish sentiment as investors weigh up the risks from rising oil prices, against a slightly more positive US outlook," he added.

Asian markets ended mixed as lingering concerns over elevated oil prices and China's slowing economy tempered upbeat US economic data, traders said.

Sentiment was also boosted after the International Monetary Fund on Thursday approved a second rescue loan for debt-riddled Greece, joining the European Union again in an attempt to save the country from bankruptcy.

The IMF executive board authorised a four-year, 28-billion-euro ($36.7-billion) loan for Greece "in support of the authorities' economic adjustment program," the global lender announced overnight.

Trader Anita Paluch at Gekko Global Markets said that the news had averted a potentially disastrous default by Athens.

"The IMF approved the 28-billion-euro loan to be released to Greece, so the country will not default on its debt payment (and) the immediate disaster has been averted for the time being," Paluch said.

In Asia on Friday, Hong Kong's main stock index closed down 0.17 percent and Seoul fell 0.46 percent, while Tokyo and Sydney finished flat.

It shares the wide range of connectivity options that many of these projectors offer, and it shares one notable image quality issue with them as well.</p> <p><strong>Features</strong></p> <p>The ML300 is rated at 300 lumens, and has a native WXGA (1,280 by 800 pixel) resolution. It is supremely compact, measuring 1.8 by 7.2 by 4.4 inches?a little larger than what we?d consider a palmtop projector, although it can just fit in my (large) hand with my thumb and fingers fully splayed. Using our postage scale, I weighted the projector at 1.4 pounds, while the power adapter adds another pound. It?s smaller and lighter than the 500-lumen Optoma ML500 mini-projector that we recently reviewed. The ML300 comes with a soft carrying case for easy transport.</p> <p>On top of the projector is a 7-button control panel, backlit with blue LEDs (though you have to press any button to activate the LEDs and then quickly make a selection, as they go dark again after 6 seconds).</p> <p>The small remote has the same 7 buttons, plus Power, Zoom, Hide [display], and brightness control, as well as dedicated buttons for accessing sources such as WiFi display, USB Display, VGA, HGMI, and Video. Working the menus, especially at first, can be awkward.? The menu system is more typical of a pico projector than a palmtop, in that you have to exit the presentation or movie you?re showing to make any changes to your settings, and then re-access your data or video connection (which can be time consuming, as you?ll soon see).When you press the Home button, it asks you if you really want to go to Home, which although it may spare you an accidental trip there, it adds another step to what can be a cumbersome process.</p> <p>Also, the remote makes use of the arrow keys not to navigate the menus, but as symbol keys to access specific functions. For instance, the Home screen shows six choices, each identified by a symbol: the right arrow denotes Setup, the up arrow, Music, etc.?they?re useless as arrow keys here in that you can?t scroll anywhere, but they will take you to the functions they symbolize. This takes some getting used to.</p> <p>The ML300 has a respectable set of connectivity options for a small projector: VGA; mini-HDMI; micro-USB (for connecting to a computer); USB type A (for a USB thumb drive); component video and audio-in; audio-out, and a micro-SD card slot. You can run presentations computer free from the projector?s 2GB of internal memory, memory card, or USB key. In addition to showing video, you can play music or display business documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF from internal memory, memory card, or thumb drive.</p> <p>Connecting to a computer with this projector via USB cable is best described as ?plug and pray?. Once you plug the cable in, you select ?USB Display? with the remote. If you?re lucky, your projector?s image will soon emulate what?s on your computer screen, but that?s not a sure thing. It only worked on the first shot on one of the 3 laptops I tested it on, though I got it up and running on all eventually. Still, I often experienced a long waiting time waiting for the connection to kick in when I switched to ?USB display?. Fortunately, there are many other ways to connect.</p> <p>I tested the ML300 from about 6 feet from our test screen, where it threw a test image about 60 inches diagonally. Image quality suffered somewhat even in modest ambient light, so it?s best used in a relatively small, dark room.</p> <p><strong>Image Quality</strong></p> <p>In testing using the DisplayMate suite, I found the ML300?s data image quality suitable for use in typical business presentations?provided that the room is dark and relatively small?though you might not want to use it in presentations where sharp text is important. The good news is that colors were bright and reasonably true, especially yellows, which often look dull or mustardy with DLP projectors. It also showed less of a rainbow effect? distracting red-green-blue rainbow glints, particularly in bright areas against a dark background?than most DLP projectors.</p> <p>One notable issue is that several test images showed the same sort of scaling artifacts that we saw in the Optoma ML500 and have seen several other recent small WXGA DLP projectors?including the BenQ Joybee GP2. They take the form of banding (spurious dark lines showing up in backgrounds that consist of repeating patterns or hatching).</p> <p>Such scaling artifacts are caused by a mismatch between the image?s dimensions and a projector?s native resolution, which shouldn?t be the case as both the source and the projector?s native resolution are 1,280 by 800 pixels. The problem seems to rest in TI?s latest DLP Pico WXGA chips. Optoma says that the mirrors on the DLP chip are arranged in a way to produce higher brightness from a more compact design. However, the mirror arrangement also makes it impossible to have a true native resolution in the traditional sense, so the projector does indeed scale the image.</p> <p>Although the scaling artifacts were more apparent it our test images with the ML300 than they were in my testing of the BenQ GP2, they shouldn?t affect most data images?at least, ones without repeating patterned backgrounds. But they may be responsible for the soft focus that was most apparent in our text testing, where the smallest font was notably blurred and the second smallest was fuzzy in both white-on-black and black-on-white text. We seldom see that much blur, especially in the black text. If you get this projector and design your own presentations for it, be sure to use relatively large fonts.</p> <p><strong>Video Quality</strong></p> <p>I tested video quality using multiple video sources over several connections, primarily HDMI. The ML300 is okay for short clips, provided that color fidelity isn?t critical. For the most part, colors were bright and well saturated, but some tinting was apparent at times. Flesh tones tended to look reddish, and some bright areas took on a greenish tinge. Also, there was some loss of detail in bright areas. One plus is that, as was the case in data images, rainbow artifacts were nearly nonexistent and shouldn?t be an issue except maybe for people particularly sensitive to the effect.</p> <p><strong>Other Issues</strong></p> <p>The audio from the ML300?s built-in 2-watt speaker was feeble; I could barely hear it when more than a few feet away from the projector, even at full volume. Fortunately the unit has an audio-out jack for headphones or powered external speakers.</p> <p>The LED light source will last an estimated 20,000 hours, so you should never have to replace bulbs. The projector is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.</p> <p>There?s a lot to like about the Optoma ML300: It?s supremely compact and portable for a WXGA projector, has a great choice of connectivity options including HDMI, a long-lasting light source, and minimal rainbow effect. It has significant downsides: an awkward menu system, scaling artifacts that may impact text quality, and unreliable USB connectivity among them. Thus, my recommendation is lukewarm.</p> <p>The Optoma ML500 is slightly larger and brighter than the ML300; the BenQ Joybee GP2 offers iPhone connectivity but is as much a consumer as a business projector. Both showed the same issue with scaling artifacts that cropped up on the ML300?s data image. The 300-lumen ViewSonic PJD2121 ($450 street, 4 stars) provides better image quality, though the Optoma has a wider range of connection choices.</p> <p><em>More Projector Reviews:</em></p> <p><span>??? But it does provide the thumbs-up emotional lift of a bumper-sticker message on game day.</p> <p>It's a credit to directors Daniel Lindsay and T.J. Daniels that the personal stories of the kids and coaches resonate more than the wins and losses.</p> <p>Undefeated is undeniably inspirational stuff.</p> <p>For the most part admirably chooses honest documentation over emotional manipulation.</p> <p>"Undefeated" is an emotional and effective film, and I'm happy for it.</p> <p>...an inspirational and often touching film that lets us get to know a dedicated coach who has faith in his players and delivers what he promises (almost).</p> <p>This is a film that doesn't cater only to the traditional football fan.</p> <p>In introducing us to [Coach] Courtney...Undefeated finds its voice</p> <p>Just like a well-fought playoff win, it'll leave you a little misty-eyed. </p> <p>This is one of the best sports documentaries of the last few years and while I don't think it should have won in a VERY good year for non-fiction film, I'm really not upset at all that it did.</p> <p>Finds the warmth and vulnerability that is sometimes hard for outsiders to see beneath the rough, damaged exterior of the impoverished Memphis neighborhood where much of the action takes place.</p> <p>Undefeated does more to draw a straight line between the desire to win (as opposed to actually winning) and the character of a man than a thousand locker room pep talks.</p> <p>This year's Oscar winner for Best Documentary Feature seems almost too good to be true...but that's what makes it so effective.</p> <p>Has a huge heart. Israeli airstrikes killed two <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331547008_3">Palestinian militants</span> and a schoolboy in the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331547008_5">Gaza Strip</span> on Monday and Palestinian rocket squads barraged <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331547008_0">southern Israel</span>, in escalating fighting that has defied international truce efforts.</p><p>The cross-border violence, touched off by <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331547008_1">Israel</span>'s killing of a top militant leader on Friday, has been the worst exchange of fire between Israel and the Hamas-ruled territory in months.</p><p>The fighting so far has killed 21 Gazans, including 18 militants, seriously wounded two Israelis, and disrupted the lives of 1 million Israelis living within the range of Gaza rockets.</p><p>The <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331547008_4">Israeli military</span> said it carried out nine air attacks against rocket-launching sites and a weapons storage facility early Monday. <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331547008_6">Islamic Jihad</span> said two of its militants were killed in two separate raids, one while he was riding a motorcycle. A 16-year-old boy wearing a school uniform was killed when a group of five civilians was struck in another attack, Gaza health official Adham Abu Salmia said.</p><p>Two dozen Palestinians, including several children, were wounded in a separate pre-dawn strike Monday in <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331547008_7">Gaza City</span>, Abu Salmia said. Chief Israeli military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai told Army Radio that this raid had targeted munitions that were stored in a residential building.</p><p>The military said the air attacks came in response to continued <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331547008_8">rocket fire</span>, and Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld reported that 16 rockets were fired into southern Israel early Monday. One rocket damaged a preschool building on a communal farm shortly before children were scheduled to arrive, but no one was hurt, Rosenfeld said.</p><p>Schools in the area were closed for a second day to avoid casualties; a day earlier, a rocket struck the courtyard of one of the empty schools.</p><p>Also Monday, militants fired three mortar shells into Kerem Shalom, the sole cargo crossing between Israel and Gaza and the conduit for 70 percent of all goods that enter the Palestinian territory. Two vehicles were hit on the Palestinian side of the crossing, but there were no injuries, Israeli officials said. Operations were halted for about half an hour before resuming.</p><p>Israel says the newly introduced Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted dozens of the rockets since the clashes erupted, and military officials speculated this averted more casualties and damage.</p><p>But although the violence shows no immediate signs of subsiding, both Hamas and Israel seem eager to avoid the kind of all-out war that erupted three years ago.</p><p>In keeping with its practice since that conflict, Hamas has stayed out of the current clashes, for fear of provoking a harsh Israeli retaliation. But it has not stopped other, smaller Gaza factions from attacking Israel, and Israel continues to hold it ultimately responsible for any violence emanating from Gaza.</p><p>In the past, similar flare-ups have died out by themselves or with informal cease-fires negotiated by third parties, often Egypt.</p><p>In this case too, Egypt has been trying to mediate an end to the clashes, and Hamas has also appealed to other Mideast countries to join the truce attempts. But the efforts have failed, with militants and Egypt insisting that Israel first halt its airstrikes.</p><p>"The Zionist state began this aggression. It has to stop its aggression first and then we will evaluate the situation and study the possibility of calm," the deputy secretary-general of Islamic Jihad, Ziad Nakhleh, was quoted as saying on the movement's web site.</p><p>Mordechai, the military spokesman, said Israel would halt its raids if the rocket fire would cease, but added that the Israeli military would continue to take pre-emptive action to foil militant attack plans.</p><p>Israel said it launched Friday's initial airstrike to stop a militant group's plan to infiltrate into Israel through Egypt's Sinai peninsula. The group ? Popular Resistance Committees ? was blamed for a similar border raid in August that killed eight Israelis, but the PRC has never acknowledged involvement.</p><p>On a visit to southern Israel on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed the airstrikes would continue as long as necessary. "We have a clear policy: we will hit anyone who plans to harm us, who prepares to harm us and who harms us," he said.</p><p>Mordechai said Monday that Israel was prepared for a ground offensive if necessary. He also said Israeli military chief Lt. Gen.
