Bell Labs' lensless camera takes photos with a tiny amount of data
Although there have been attempts at lensless cameras before, few of them would replace our point-and-shoots when they're frequently expensive, or capture photos outside of the visible light spectrum. We shouldn't have either of those problems with Bell Labs' new prototype. The experiment uses an LCD as a grid of apertures that filter the light reaching a sensor. As that sensor can piece together an image simply by grabbing random aperture samples and correlating the data, it only needs a sliver of the usual information to produce a usable shot. The lens-free, mostly off-the-shelf approach could lower the costs of both the sensor and the overall camera, but it could also lead to simpler comparison tools: the correlation makes it easier to tell if an object is missing, for example. Bell Labs hasn't talked about any production plans, but we have a hunch that Alcatel-Lucent would rather not let its research wing's technology go to waste.

Gigabyte PC revamps include game-ready Ultrabooks, AMD A4-based tablet (hands-on)
Gigabyte loves to pull out all the stops at Computex, and this year is no exception: the company just unveiled 11 (mostly) new laptops and tablets. According to a brochure on hand at the computer maker's demo table, the emphasis is chiefly on slimmer portables with both Haswell-era Core processors and some dedicated graphics firepower. The P34G and P35K Ultrablade models are equally 0.83 inches thick, but pack gaming-friendly GeForce GTX 760M (P34G) and 765M (P35K) video. More pedestrian Ultrabooks get a boost as well: both the touchscreen U24T (pictured above) and the non-touch U24F wield a mid-tier GeForce GT 750M. If you don't mind bulkier laptops, the Q2546N, Q2556N, U35F, P27K and P27W scale from the GeForce GT 740M through to the GTX 770M while allowing for more storage and Creative Sound Blaster audio tuning.
The tablet updates aren't nearly as extensive. Most of Gigabyte's energy centers on the 10-inch Slate S10A, a spin on the S1082 with an AMD Temash-based A4-1200 processor that delivers up to 14 hours of battery life. Other refreshes are even subtler: the 11.6-inch U21M convertible is similar to the U2142, while the dockable S1185 returns virtually unchanged outside from a new Padbook nickname. Release dates and prices aren't immediately available for any of the new systems, unfortunately, but you can peek at a few of the fresh models in our hands-on photos just below.

Fed Chair Bernanke tells Princeton grads: 'Call your parents'

?Following Bernanke comments, dollar hits three year high? reads a recent Monitor headline.
We can?t really know the Fed Chairman?s deep personal philosophy or theological underpinnings, but there seems to be a Zen-like quality about him, a certain calmness ? which is a good thing. Wouldn?t want that hand on the economy?s tiller to be shaky in any sense.
So when he speaks, whatever the venue, we pay attention.
On Sunday, it was his baccalaureate?address to graduating seniors at Princeton University, where he taught from 1985 to 2002 when he joined the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, eventually appointed to chair the Fed by President Bush in 2006.
Quoting poet Robert Burns, the New Testament (?I am sure my rabbi will forgive me,? he said.), and 20th century philosopher Forrest Gump, Bernanke laid out his advice. Being an economist, his had bullet points.
He considered using as his text the Ten Commandments.
But, he said, ?I don't have that kind of confidence, and, anyway, coveting your neighbor's ox or donkey is not the problem it used to be, so I thought I would use my few minutes today to make Ten Suggestions, or maybe just Ten Observations, about the world and your lives after Princeton.?
?All of what follows has been road-tested in real-life situations,? Bernanke note, ?but past performance is no guarantee of future results.?
Princeton grads are by definition part of the elite, many destined to join the wealthy one percent the Occupy movement demonstrated against.
To them he quoted the New Testament: ?From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded" (Luke 12:48, New Revised Standard Version Bible).
?Kind of grading on the curve, you might say,? he added.
He also recommended a ?close companion on your journey,? chosen for the more enduring qualities.
?Don't get me wrong, I am all for beauty, romance, and sexual attraction ? where would Hollywood and Madison Avenue be without them?? he said. ?But while important, those are not the only things to look for in a partner. The two of you will have a long trip together, I hope, and you will need each other's support and sympathy more times than you can count. Speaking as somebody who has been happily married for 35 years, I can't imagine any choice more consequential for a lifelong journey than the choice of a traveling companion.?

"A time will come when you will want your own grown-up, busy, hyper-successful children to call you," said Bernanke, who has two adult children. "Also, remember who paid your tuition to Princeton."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? New York City radio station Hot 97 celebrated its 20th annual Summer Jam concert with young rappers who are dominating the charts, a respected veteran hip-hop group and a slew of surprises.
Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Lil Kim were among the guest stars of Sunday's Summer Jam XX at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky and French Montana performed sets that electrified the excited crowd. Wu-Tang Clan hit the stage and were solid, though the energy of the audience ? filled with a good number of twentysomethings ? dwindled throughout the set.
Here's a breakdown of the highlights from Summer XX, which also featured Chris Brown, Miguel, Wale, Fabolous and Joe Budden.

SURPRISE: IT'S WEEZY F. BABY AND RICKY ROZAY
No offense to French Montana, but Summer Jam XX would have been disappointing if the rapper closed the five-hour concert alone. Thankfully, he brought out Rick Ross ? and then to the largest roar the audience gave Sunday night ? there came Lil Wayne. They performed the addictive hit, "Pop That," as the crowd sang along and jumped up and down.
Bringing out a special guest (or guests) was the night's theme: Minaj earned cheers when she helped 2 Chainz on "I Luv Dem Strippers" and "Beez In the Trap," Fabolous brought out fellow Brooklynite Lil Kim and R&B singer Miguel had J. Cole and Mariah Carey help him with his set.
A$AP Rocky, 24, said he's a big fan of 90's hip-hop, namedropping acts like Wu-Tang Clan, N.W.A., UGK and Three 6 Mafia as favorites. But he wasn't all talk: quickly after he talked about his rap heros, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony joined him onstage.

HIP-HOP'S NEW CLASS TAKE OVER
Hot 97 was celebrating 20 years of Summer Jam, but rappers in their twenties dominated the annual concert. Hip-hop's new class, including Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, French Montana and 2 Chainz (he's 35, but appeals to a younger audience), kept the crowd of thousands on their feet, performing back-to-back jams that have controlled urban radio in the last year.
Lamar, who is the critical darling of the bunch, was the best of the youngsters: He was cool onstage as he rapped songs from his near-platinum major label debut, "good kid, m.A.A.d city," including "Poetic Justice" and "(Expletive), Don't Kill My Vibe." He left out "Swimming Pools (Drank)," though that song would have been appropriate since the audience was drenched after it rained ? several times ? at the MetLife Stadium.
2 Chainz entered the stage rapping his verse from Kanye West's "Mercy," and he followed that with a number of radio hits, including "I'm Different," ''Birthday Song" and "No Lie." A$AP Rocky was wild onstage, and rap's new class showed the brotherly love when he was joined by Lamar and 2 Chainz for "(Expletive) Problems."

THAT WAS A LITTLE AWKWARD
Nicki Minaj is obviously confident ? not many people wear multi-colored wigs like she does. But on Sunday, things were just a little awkward for the rapper, and for a couple reasons.
Last year Minaj backed out of headlining Summer Jam after Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg dissed the rapper and her dance-pop hit, "Starships." Minaj debuted in 2009 deeply rooted in rap, but later she began to sing on her songs and found success with electronic-based tunes and collaborations with David Guetta. But the 30-year-old returned to the Summer Jam stage ? for mere minutes with 2 Chainz ? in a curly blonde wig and blue jeans. She exchanged words ? they seemed cordial ? with Rosenberg onstage after performing.
Minaj also performed on a stage where her enemies were also present: Her fellow and former "American Idol" judge, Mariah Carey, was in the building, as was Lil Kim, who feuded with Minaj when the rapper came on the music scene.

TOO YOUNG TO APPRECIATE?
Wu-Tang Clan, who also celebrated 20 years in music Sunday, showed no signs of slowing down with a set that felt both fresh and nostalgic. Too bad the crowd didn't think so.
The young audience grew excited during small parts of the rap group's set, and Ghostface Killah, Method Man, RZA, Raekwon and the other members seemed to notice.
"All we ask is that the energy we give to you, give it back to us," Method Man told the crowd.
"I think New York forgot about us a little, man," RZA said later.
Despite the some of the crowd's disinterest in the veteran group, they blazed the stage, performing jams like "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing ta (Expletive) Wit," ''Da Mystery of Chessboxin'" and "C.R.E.A.M."

HIP-HOP'S COUSIN: THE R&B TREATS
Summer Jam is a rapper's show, but R&B held its own, thanks to Miguel and Chris Brown.
Miguel was silky, performing hits like "Sure Thing," ''How Many Drinks" and "Adorn" ? all as the crowd sang along. He earned more points when he brought out diva Mariah Carey to sing her new single, "Beautiful," where he is featured.
Brown, who has rapped on some of his songs, was bold when he hit the stage: He started with the European-flavored "Beautiful People," where he was backed with futuristic dancers and Auto-Tune. The crowd didn't fist pump, but they were pumped.
Brown was quick on his feet when performing "Fine China" and slowed things down for "Don't Judge Me." And while he first wore a Yankees jersey, he took it off to sing ? wait for it ? his R&B hit "Strip."

Unlike the Honest Cooking website, the magazine does not feature recipes. Instead it embraces the geekier side of food and drink and it celebrates all of the stories that come with great ingredients and memorable meals.The first issue is crammed with intriguing tales about dim sum marathons, North Korean propaganda restaurants, rockstar wine growers, monkey ass coffee (seriously), a French culinary revolution, former gang members, and the unsung heroes of professional kitchens.?

I'm pretty ecstatic to not only be part of the team over at the Honest Cooking website, but to also be a contributor to the debut issue of the magazine. MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Two jaguar cubs are providing more than just cooing fans for Milwaukee's zoo. The spotted brothers are introducing new genes to the endangered species' captive population because unlike most zoo babies, their father was born in the wild.
The blue-eyed cubs, born Nov. 13, don't officially have names just yet, but keepers at the Milwaukee County Zoo are calling them "Gaps" and "Dots," due to the markings on their heads.
Stacey Johnson, coordinator of the jaguar species survival plan for the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, said it is rare for zoos' reproductive programs to have access to animals born in the wild.
"They are bringing in a new inflow of genes that will help sustain the population over next 100 years," Johnson said.
He also noted that the cubs ? the first born at the zoo since 1975 ? are also beneficial because female jaguars currently outnumber males in zoos in North America.
The cubs, currently about the size of house cats, are still too small to navigate their multi-level exhibit, so they aren't yet on display. But fans can catch glimpses of the curious cubs and their mother on the zoo's live webcam.
Zoo officials plan to put the cubs on display by early February.
Their father, Pat, was captured in Central America after being deemed a problem jaguar for attacking cattle, so he was a bit of a celebrity at the Belize Zoo before coming to Milwaukee in 2008. The estimated 15-year-old animal also has a book named after him, "Pat the Great Cat: A Jaguars Journey," which was written by children in Milwaukee and Belize as part of a literacy program.
The cubs were the first for their mother, Stella.
The cubs will remain at the zoo for about a year before being moved to other zoos whose jaguars need genetic diversity, zoo spokeswoman Jennifer Diliberti said. Jaguars are found in the wild in the southern U.S., Mexico, Central America and South America.
The webcam has received about 16,000 hits since it went live Dec. 18. The average time spent on the webcam is about 25 minutes ? compared to 2 minutes on their home page, Diliberti said.
"People are really following their story, which is wonderful," she said.

Asian shares slip, Basel ruling supports banks
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Asian stocks drifted down on Monday as investors booked profits from a New Year rally that had pushed markets to multi-month highs, although financial stocks gained after global regulators decided to relax draft plans for tough new bank liquidity rules.
Commodity prices mostly held steady, supported by data showing the U.S. economy continuing on a path of slow but steady recovery that propelled Wall Street stocks to a five-year high.
Financial bookmakers called Europe's main share indexes to open flat or slightly lower, while S&P 500 index futures traded in Asia eased 0.2 percent, pointing to a weaker start in New York.
"It just seems like markets are entering a consolidation phase after recent gains and with most markets trading at fresh 12-month highs," said Stan Shamu, market strategist at financial spreadbetting firm IG in Melbourne.
The dollar fell against the yen, coming off a two-and-a-half year peak it had logged against the Japanese currency as investors adjusted to the possibility of more monetary stimulus in 2013 from the Bank of Japan and less from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan, which had reached its highest level since August 2011 on Thursday, eased 0.1 percent, while Tokyo's Nikkei share average retreated after touching a 23-month high in early trade to close down 0.8 percent.
CASH BUFFERS
The MSCI benchmark's financial sector sub-index firmed after the Basel Committee of banking supervisors agreed on Sunday to give banks four more years and greater flexibility to build up cash buffers so they can use some of their reserves to help struggling economies.
HSBC Holdings Hong Kong shares rose 1 percent, while Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd gained 0.6 percent.
Shares in Japanese exporters were supported by the trend of a weakening yen, which traded around 87.85 to the dollar, up 0.3 percent on the day, after the U.S. currency rose as far as 88.40 yen, its highest in nearly two-and-a-half years, on Friday.
The dollar posted a gain of around 2.7 percent against the yen last week, its biggest weekly rise in more than a year. Its gains had accelerated after minutes from the Federal Reserve's December meeting showed some policymakers had considered ending the Fed's bond-buying programme as early as this year.
By contrast, many investors are now betting that Japan's new government, led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, will push to weaken the yen and drive through aggressive fiscal stimulus, and pressure the Bank of Japan to do the same on the monetary side.
Although the dollar may pull back against the yen given the speed of its rise over the past month, its uptrend seems likely to remain intact, said Hiroshi Maeba, head of FX trading Japan for UBS in Tokyo.
"My sense is that the market could still head much higher," Maeba said. "I think 90 yen might be reached pretty soon."
The dollar firmed against the euro, which traded around $1.3035.
The U.S. stock benchmark S&P 500 index closed at its highest level since December 2007 on Friday after data showed a steady pace of jobs growth and brisk expansion of the services sector in the world's biggest economy.
That offered support to growth-sensitive commodities, with copper little changed just below $8,100 a tonne, while Brent crude oil eased a little to around $111.20.
Spot gold firmed 0.3 percent to around $1,660 an ounce.

Bahrain court upholds life sentences on opposition
MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? Bahrain's highest court Monday upheld jail terms for 20 opposition figures ? including eight sentenced to life ? for alleged plots to "overthrow" the state in a decision likely to touch off more protests in the Gulf nation and bring renewed criticism from its Western allies.
The group includes a rights activist who staged a 110-day hunger strike last year to protest the verdicts, which critics have denounced as part of attempts to crush an Arab Spring-inspired uprising began nearly two years ago in the strategic island kingdom.
Authorities in Bahrain ? which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet ? accuse Iran of encouraging the Shiite-led protests as a way to undermine Bahrain's pro-Western leadership and gain a key foothold on the doorstep of rival Saudi Arabia. Tehran has sharply criticized Bahrain's crackdowns, but denies it has any direct role with the opposition.
Bahrain's majority Shiites, who have led sporadic unrest in past decades, claim they face systematic discrimination at the hands of the Sunni monarchy. Bahrain's rulers have offered some reforms, including giving more powers to the elected parliament, but protest leaders say they fall short of demands for a role in key government affairs.
More than 55 people have died in the unrest since February 2011 and many opposition leaders and activists have been arrested, including the group of 20 charged with "plotting to overthrow" the ruling system by leading the protests.
Defense attorney Jalil al-Aradi said the high court refused to reconsider the sentences or convictions, which were originally handed down in 2011 by a military-led tribunal created under temporary martial law-style rules. The group has claimed they faced abuses while in custody.
Among the eight sentenced to life is rights activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who staged a more than three-month hunger strike last year in protest. The other 12 have sentences ranging from five to 15 years, with seven convicted in absentia.
The case has brought international pressure on Bahrain, including efforts by Denmark to free al-Khawaja, who also holds Danish citizenship.
Scattered protests broke out in Bahrain shortly after the court decision, which could close all further appeal options.
"The Bahrain regime is pushing its human rights crisis closer to the edge," said Brian Dooley, director of the human rights defenders program at U.S.-based Human Rights First.
Last year, the official Bahrain News Agency said the charges include "plotting to overthrow the regime" and having "foreign intelligence contacts" ? a reference to Shiite powerhouse Iran and its proxy, Hezbollah in Lebanon. No clear evidence, however, has been presented to back Bahrain's allegations of direct Iranian aid to the opposition.
A government statement at the time said the court "provided all assurances of a fair trial" and allowed defense attorneys full access to the defendants. It also said they received "full medical care" in prison.
The crisis in Bahrain has pushed Washington into a difficult corner. It seeks to keep it crucial security and political bonds with Bahrain's leaders, but has increasingly condemned the ongoing violence and urged the country's rulers to open wide-ranging talks with the opposition.
The U.S. said it regretted Monday's decision and expressed concern that it would further restrict freedom of expression and compromise the climate for reconciliation.
"We have repeatedly voiced our concern about these cases, both publicly and privately and at the highest levels, and urged the government of Bahrain to abide by its international obligations," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, adding that U.S. embassy observers were at the trial.
"We call on the government of Bahrain to investigate all reports of torture, including those made by the defendants in this case, as it is pledged to do, and to hold accountable any who are found responsible."
Bahrain also faces other showdowns over jailed activists, including rights campaigner Nabeel Rajab whose prosecution has brought criticism from Washington.
Bahrain's main Shiite political group, Al Wefaq, claimed the courts are used a "tool to punish the opposition" and suggests that authorities are not serious about offers for a political dialogue to ease the tensions.
"It seemed there is no solution for the Bahraini crisis," said a statement by the group, "because there is no serious desire to solve this crisis."
