U.S. halts some Afghan forces training after attacks

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The U.S. military has halted the training of Afghan government-backed militias for at least a month in order to redo the vetting of new recruits after a string of attacks by Afghan soldiers and police on their international allies, officials said Sunday.

There have been 34 insider attacks this year ? at least 12 in August alone ? that have killed 45 international troops, throwing doubt on the ability of Afghan and coalition forces to live and work together during a key time in the transition to Afghan control of security. One of the pillars of the international troop drawdown is for allied forces to hand over responsibility for the country's security to Afghans by the end of 2014.

Lt. Col. John Harrell, a spokesman for U.S. special operations forces in Afghanistan, said the pause in training affects about 1,000 trainees of the Afghan Local Police, a militia backed by the government in Kabul.

"The training of the ALP recruits has been paused while we go through this re-vetting process, to take a look at this process to see if there's anything that we can improve," Harrell said. "It may take a month, it may take two months, we don't know."

Afghan Local Police forces that have already been trained will continue to operate, and the government will continue to recruit new members, Harrell said.

Col. Tom Collins, a spokesman for the international military coalition in Afghanistan, also said there was no set date for the training of the local police to resume.

The pause in training for the government-backed militias was first reported by the Washington Post.

Harrell said the Americans last month also put a two-week pause on operations by the Afghan special forces last month to re-vet those soldiers for any potential ties to insurgents. He did not say whether any suspicious links were uncovered.

The international forces in Afghanistan have been revisiting both security for their forces and re-examining the backgrounds of the Afghan forces in the wake of the recent attacks on international troops.

The Post also reported that training of special operations forces had been halted, but a spokesman for the NATO training mission in Afghanistan, or NTM-A, which oversees this training said there has been no such pause.

"There has been no halt in training with NTM-A assets as they relate to special forces," said Maj. Steve Neta of the Canadian military. He also said no other training programs involving the traditional military or police have been halted for re-vetting.

The head of the Afghan special operations forces said there has been no pause to the training of his forces. The program to train Afghan special operations forces had already been on break for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and had been scheduled to restart in mid-September.

"It will continue. It is not ended at all. After the 15th of September we restart," Brig. Gen. Sayed Karim said.

The most recent insider attack attack took place last week when an Afghan army soldier turned his gun on Australian soldiers, killing three of them.

Over the weekend, the U.S.-led NATO coalition traded barbs with President Hamid Karzai over a joint operation carried out by Afghan and Australian troops to catch the insurgents responsible for the shooting in Uruzgan province.

In the attack, an Afghan soldier opened fire on Australian soldiers, killing three and wounding two, according to the Australian military. He later fled.

In a statement issued late Saturday, Karzai's office condemned an operation by international troops to go after the shooter, describing it as unilateral and saying it resulted in the deaths of a 70-year-old man his 30-year-old son.

Karzai's office said the operation took place without the coordination or approval of provincial authorities and violated an agreement that calls on Afghan troops to lead night raids.

The U.S.-led international coalition responded by saying that Afghan officials approved and supported the strike.

Prior to the two most recent attacks, coalition authorities said they believed that 25 percent of this year's attacks had confirmed or suspected links to the Taliban, which sometimes has infiltrated the ranks of the Afghan army and police and in other cases is believed to have coerced or otherwise persuaded legitimate members of the Afghan forces to turn on their coalition partners.

Michigan Memories: University of Michigan student housing a century ago

This week 560 University of Michigan students moved into Alice Lloyd Hall, replete with 45 different types of chairs, several flat screen televisions, state-of-the-art community and meeting rooms and furnishings that four-star hotels would envy.

The price tag of Alice Lloyd's yearlong renovation, which finished this summer, was $56 million.

This year, 860-bed East Quadrangle is following in Alice Lloyd's footsteps with a $116 million renovation that will finish during summer 2013.

But what did college dormitories look like nearly 100 years ago? AnnArbor.com takes a look at U-M dormitories built between 1914 and 1967 to see how Wolverines of the past lived while on campus.

Ford Focus on track to beat Corolla as world's best-selling car

Ford Motor says its Focus small car is on track to become the best-selling car in the world this year, trumping the Toyota Corolla.

Ford sold 489,616 Focus sedans and hatchbacks worldwide in the first half of 2012. That was almost 27,000 more than the perennial best-seller, the Toyota Corolla.

Ford made the announcement at its assembly plant in Rayong, which opened in May to build the Focus. The Thailand plant, which is one of Ford's most advanced, has the capacity to produce 150,000 cars per year for sale in Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and other countries in the region.

Ford's recently revamped Focus is sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. It's a strong seller in the U.S., where Focus sales were up 31 percent in the first half of the year compared with 2011. But the Corolla is still king in the U.S., where it outsold the Focus by nearly 27,500 in the first half of the year.

The Corolla could still top the Focus worldwide, too. Last year at this time the Focus was ahead of the Corolla, but the Corolla pulled through in the end, outselling the Focus by more than 259,000 vehicles.

At the plant Friday, Ford executives were also celebrating the production of the 350 millionth vehicle Ford has made since its founding 109 years ago.

New wedding shop opens in Winchester

New wedding shop opens in Winchester

A NEW wedding shop has opened in Winchester.

Sarah Taylor opened the independent bridalwear shop Daisy Drew and aims to make Winchester women?s dreams come true for years to come.

She said: ?On our first day we sold a wedding dress and it just feels so nice to help somebody find their dress because it?s something women dream about from when they are little girls. We want to stick around here and hopefully expand in the future so we can help women have their perfect weddings.

?I?ve not worked in bridalwear before so it?s a new venture for me doing something I want to do rather than just paid to do. I thought if I don?t do it now, I?ll never do it.?

It comes only 18 months after independent shop The Bridal Room on Chesil Street?closed after 20 years.

But Ms Taylor said she had no concerns about whether Winchester was the right market for the shop.

She said: ?Most bridalwear shops tend to be at the high end of the market but we make sure we offer affordable prices. There is definitely a market here and particularly for fair and reasonably priced dresses.?

She runs the shop with the help of two consultants, Rachel Carby and Rhiannon Riley.

Ms Carby added: ?We do not want our ladies to be going into debt for their weddings, we want them to completely enjoy them so we feel we are very reasonable.?

A wedding dress at the shop ranges from ?375-?1,400, while evening wear and prom dresses are also sold for between ?150-?300.

Ms Taylor added the shop was pleased to throw its support behind the Hampshire Chronicle?s Shop Local campaign to boost independent traders.

She said: ?With high streets all looking the same with the big chains one after another it?s important to keep things local and independent retailers like ourselves add variety to a place like Winchester.?

Stocks higher, but volatile, after Bernanke speaks

Stocks traded higher on Friday but couldn't hang on to strong gains as investors tried to figure out what to make of comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

Stocks had been up strongly in the morning, before Bernanke declared that the Fed is ready to take more action to help an economy that's "far from satisfactory." They briefly gave up their gains, then rebounded. At one point the Dow was up as many as 151 points.

In early afternoon trading, though, stocks were still up, though not as much. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 79 points at 13,079. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose six points to 1,405. The Nasdaq was up 14 points to 3,062.

Investors have been watching to see whether the Fed will buy more bonds to further lower long-term interest rates, although few expected him to announce new bond-buying Friday. Bernanke said the Fed "should not rule out" new policies to improve the job market. But he stopped short of committing the Fed to any specific move.

Bernanke "was a primary reason for the markets being as volatile as they are today," said Frank Fantozzi, CEO of Planned Financial Services in Cleveland.

His comments got a more uniform reception in energy markets, which tend to rise on bullish signs for the economy. Oil prices jumped $1.56 to $96.18 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas, heating oil, and wholesale gasoline prices all rose more than 1 percent.

Also Friday, the Commerce Department said factory orders rose 2.8 percent in July on surging demand for autos and commercial planes. However, orders for core capital goods ? a key measure of investment spending ? dropped 4 percent. That was that figure's fourth decline in five months.

Investors seemed more focused on Bernanke's comments and the overall higher factory orders, though.

Stocks rose in nine out of 10 industry groups in the S&P 500. Utility stocks declined slightly. Energy stocks had the biggest gain, up 0.8 percent.

Other shares with big moves on Friday included:

? Facebook set new lows, falling 78 cents, or 4.1 percent, to $18.31 per share. Its previous intraday low was $18.75. The stock is down nearly 52 percent from its $38 initial public offering price.

? US Airways Group Inc., up 3.3 percent after disclosing that it signed a confidentiality agreement that signals the beginning of talks with American Airlines for a possible merger.

? Zumiez fell 10 percent after the specialty sports and clothing retailer said third-quarter earnings would be lower than analysts had expected.

? Science Applications International Corp. rose 5 percent after saying it will split at the end of next year into two businesses, with one focusing on national security, engineering and health customers, and another focused on government customers.

Stocks in Europe were mixed. The German DAX and the CAC 40 in France both rose about 1 percent. The FTSE 100 in Britain fell 0.1 percent.

The dollar fell, with the euro rising to $1.256, and the Japanese Yen rising against the dollar to 78.33.

Canadian real estate startup allows Realtors to blast their way ...

There is no shortage of services that try to meld classified advertising listings with social media. Canada?s CityBlast is just one of the many, but the company?s value proposition caught our interest.

The starting point is nothing new. The product is aimed at real estate agents specifically: if you have a property to sell, you list it as you would on other sites, with a description and picture. The trick is that CityBlast then syndicates your listing through its network of 1,300 Canadian real estate agents who have Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. The listing appears as a status update on these social media services with a link back to the listing?s CityBlast page. Friends of friends (Facebook) or those following an agent (Twitter) will also see the listing. CityBlast says that it reaches over 730,000 social media users a day this way.

CityBlast also offers a ClientFinder tool, which helps an agent add real estate content to their social media sites (this one is Facebook specific). CityBlast creates the content itself (status updates and links on real estate trends, local updates and the like) and posts it to the Realtor?s Facebook page. Once a Realtor has signed up, the posts appear automatically, so the agent has a regular stream of new articles and links without having to do anything proactive. (As with all social media, to maximize the service?s value, agents should monitor their streams and add their own comments.) There?s a 30 day free trial, after that it?s $25/month for agents.

CityBlast has a model that?s easily emulated and it could (and should) be easily rolled out to other classified verticals. The company was launched earlier this year and it?s still a two-man operation, so let?s give them a bit more time to prove the model before classified ad sites consider jumping in themselves.
